Upper 4 learn more about personal safety

The Lifewise Centre is next to the huge Magna science museum inTinsley. The theme of this action-packed visit was personal safety with the class taking part in various scenarios on a giant 'film set' with streets, a park, a shop and houses. In life-like situations we leaned how to react in a house fire, how to use a Puffin Crossing safely and timed our reactions when braking in a real (but stationary) car. Actors helped us to see how we could deal with tricky situations involving other groups of young people and we ended the visit taking part in a re-enactment of a trial in a magistrates' court. Our thanks go to the representatives from the police, fire service, magistrates' court, road safety unit and the actors and other volunteers who put on such a well-co-ordinated and high standard experience for us. We learned a lot and will be trying to put this knowledge into practice.

Learning to use a Puffin Crossing safely

A fast reaction! But the car still travels
forward further than you think before it stops.

There's a fire and you are in the bedroom.
No need to panic. We learned a few simple
moves to help keep us safe. The fire service
has been alerted so they are on their way.
Smoke can be kept at bay with bedclothes
along the bottom of the door.

A 'situation' at a bus stop was presented to two
of our pupils who had to react in the safest way possible. This scenario was watched by the rest
of the group who then discussed the best
course of action with the police officers.
